A transparent artwork file keeps the area around your design empty, so the transfer contains the intended artwork rather than an unwanted background. Before ordering DTF transfers, check transparency, finished dimensions and edge quality at the size you intend to print. Your supplier's file requirements take precedence.
A checkerboard in an editor commonly indicates transparency, but a checkerboard that is part of the image itself will print as artwork. Open the exported file in an editor and place it over both a dark and a light background. Look for opaque rectangles, stray pixels and faint halos. Do not assume a white background disappears automatically.
Choose the width and height you want on the garment. A small image enlarged substantially may appear soft even if it looks crisp on a phone. Review thin lines and small lettering at their final size, and ask your printer about minimum details before submitting a complex design. Upscaling adds pixels but cannot guarantee recovered detail.
Use a format that supports transparency, such as PNG, if your printer accepts it. Preserve transparency when exporting; JPEG does not preserve an alpha channel. Reopen the exported file and check its dimensions, edges and background. If you are arranging multiple designs, leave the space required by your supplier so each transfer can be cut and pressed.
A small test can reveal issues with detail, colour and application on the actual fabric. Follow your supplier's current pressing and care instructions; settings vary by transfer and equipment. If the artwork includes a licensed graphic, confirm that you have permission to reproduce it.
Formulated Prints offers DTF transfer products and answers ordering and application questions in its FAQ. Ask the team if you are unsure whether a file is suitable before placing a larger order.
